Segregate waste for storage in a waste yard

Version 1 - Last updated 23rd July 2025

The waste in a facility should first be sorted and segregated, then stored properly in a waste yard, before it is finally disposed of or used for any reuse or recycling purpose.

Steps for segregating waste

  • Sort and group the waste types from the potential sources as detailed below. *
  • Create designated segregated storage spaces in the waste yard.
  • Use containers marked with legible labels for each waste type in the waste storage area.
  • Display any specific precautions for storage and handling of waste types on the corresponding labels.

* Sort and group the waste types from the potential sources

Potential source: Production departments main and sub chemicals stores.

Actions required:

  • Must be stored separately in waste yard with a clear label "obsolete/redundant chemical".
  • In case these are flammable, they should be stored in the waste yard with all fire safety precautions.

Potential source: Production departments main and sub chemicals stores.

Actions required:

  • If these can be used up, they should be stored and labelled separately in the chemical store.
  • If they are to be returned to the vendor, they should be stored in a separate area in the chemical store marked "returnable material" with all required documents.
  • If they are to be disposed of, they should be transported to the waste yard and stored separately. Flammable chemicals should be stored with fire safety precautions

Potential source: Production departments and sub stores.

Actions required:

  • Send for thorough washing and then transport to separate storage space in the waste yard if they are for disposal.
  • In case they are reused for any purpose (e.g. to hold plants or make waste storage containers) they should be transported accordingly.

Potential source: Production department, engineering and main chemical store.

Actions required:

  • Must be stored separately in the waste yard with clear labelling before disposal.

Potential source: Printing and screen making departments

Potential source: Main and sub chemical stores.

Actions required:

  • Must be stored separately in the waste yard with clear labelling before disposal.

Potential source: Finished goods stores.

Actions required:

  • Must be stored separately in the waste yard with clear labelling before disposal or resuse.

Potential source: Production departments.

Actions required:

  • Must be stored separately in the waste yard with clear labelling before disposal.

Potential source: Office spaces, work cabins, production departments.

Actions required:

  • Different types of e-waste should be collected and stored separately in the waste yard with clear labelling, since this is important for for disposal to the e-waste recycler. Since it contains toxic chemicals, proper signs to indicate the hazard should be displayed.

Potential source: Production departments main and sub chemicals stores.

Actions required:

  • Must be stored separately in the waste yard with clear labelling before disposal.
