Identify waste types
The identification of waste involves locating and categorising the different types of waste generated within the facility.
Chemical-related waste
The focus of waste management in the SCMF-CMS is on chemical-related, waste that can contain the risk of ZDHC MRSL substances and is therefore hazardous to human health and environment.
The table below shows the different types of chemical-related (hazardous) wastes and their potential sources:
Chemical-related waste that can contain ZDHC MRSL substances:
- Chemicals that have exceeded the expiry date.
- Chemicals that have altered in physical or chemical properties which render them unusable.
- Contain intentional use of ZDHC MRSL substance/s
Chemicals that are no longer used in the facility due to various reasons but may be of usable quality.
Containers that contained chemicals but are now empty.
- Plastic inner layer of chemical container.
- Plastic used to wrap textiles or chemical drums.
- Plastic film used to clean up a chemical spill.
Utility chemicals used during general maintenance at the manufacturing facility.
Printing screens and meshes no longer in use.
Empty print cartridges both textile and digital printing machines and office paper printing.
Textiles that have come into contact with chemicals that are now contaminated and cannot be used in production of goods.
Trimmings, buffing, shavings and dust from wet blues and tanned hides that cannot be used in production.
Discarded electronics that have come to the end of their life cycle (batteries, fluorescent bulbs, lamps etc.)
PPE that has finished its life cycle either by end of use or damage.
