Ensure compatibility precautions for storage of commodity chemicals
Version 1 - Last updated 23rd July 2025
Commodity chemicals require specific additional storage requirements based on their compatibility.
Commodity chemical incompatibility
Suppliers must understand the incompatibility of commodity chemicals with the information given in Section 7 of an SDS.
In general, the following compatibility chart can be used for commodity chemicals.

Some commodity chemicals are hazardous due to their reactive nature and require specific conditions for storage. The table below highlights specific storage precautions for certain commodity chemicals:
Examples of commodity chemicals specific storage conditions due to compatibility
Name of Commodity Chemical | Specific Storage Conditions |
---|---|
Acetic acid | Avoid ammonia exposure, metal contact |
Ammonia solution | Avoid loose lids. leakages, acid contact and storage temperatures more than 25℃ |
Boric acid | Avoid moist environment and water leakages nearby storage |
Hypochlorites (sodium and calcium) | Store at temperature lower than 20℃. Avoid metal contacts. |
Hydrochloric acid (in any dilution) | Avoid any type of leakages (including gas leakages through loose lids / damaged store tanks etc.) Avoid metal contacts. |
Peroxides | Avoid direct sunlight and store in a cool dry place |
Carbonates and hydroxides, used in solid form | Avoid high moisture areas and keep a dry environment as much as possible |
Nitric acid (in pure form) | Avoid metal contacts and any form of leakages (liquid as well as gaseous). Avoid closed rooms and make sure the area is well- ventilated. |
Sodium hydrosulphide | Avoid any acidic environment |
Sodium hydrosulphite | avoid storing with peroxides or direct contact with acid. Always store away from water and in a dry place. |
